How to Recognize a Carpenter Ant Problem

Catching an infestation early can help limit structural damage. There are several signals worth knowing, though what’s visible to a homeowner often represents only a fraction of the actual colony.

Common signs of an active infestation:

• Frass: Coarse, sawdust-like debris mixed with insect fragments found near small kickout holes in wood. This is the clearest physical indicator of active nesting galleries.
• Large black ants indoors: Workers ranging from 1/4 to 1/2 inch, especially near kitchens, bathrooms, basements, or anywhere moisture is present.
• Sounds inside walls: A faint rustling or crackling from wooden beams or wall cavities, most noticeable at night when carpenter ants are most active.
• Winged swarmers indoors: Swarmers indicate the colony is mature, typically three or more years old. Outdoors, they emerge April through June, but they can appear indoors as early as January in a heated structure. Carpenter ants have a pinched waist and unequal wing pairs, which distinguishes them from termites, which have a straight waist and equal wing pairs.
• Ant trails: Workers traveling along exterior foundations, siding, deck supports, or from nearby stumps or trees.

Store-bought sprays and consumer baits can kill foraging workers but leave the queen and any satellite colonies completely untreated.
